Bill Saffo
About
Bill Saffo graduated from Hoggard High School in 1978 and earned a B.A. from UNC-Wilmington in 1983. A lifelong Wilmington resident, he built his career as a real estate broker and Realtor with Coldwell Banker Seacoast. First elected to the City Council in November 2003, he was appointed Mayor in December 2006 after Mayor Spence Broadhurst's resignation and has been re-elected continuously — most recently in November 2025 (current term 2025–2027) — making him the longest-serving mayor in Wilmington's history. Saffo has led downtown revitalization across two decades, managed the city's response to Hurricane Florence (2018), championed the expansion of Wilmington International Airport (ILM) and port development, and backed the 2025 "One City" organizational alignment streamlining city government.
