Dane Scalise earned a B.A. in English and History from UNC-Greensboro and a J.D. from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. He practices as an attorney in Wilmington (ILM Lawyers) and serves as General Counsel for Griffin-Estep Benefit Group; from 2016–2020 he was a Deputy Commissioner of the NC Industrial Commission. Scalise was appointed in April 2023 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Commissioner Deb Hays, then elected in his own right in November 2024 (term 2024–2028). He was named Vice-Chair in December 2025. His priorities include legal and regulatory affairs, budget discipline, and workforce-housing and economic-development initiatives.
