Deb Butler is a native North Carolinian and practicing attorney first elected to the NC House of Representatives in November 2016 (assumed office February 6, 2017) and continuously re-elected since — now serving her current term through January 1, 2027, and running for re-election in 2026. Representing District 18 (New Hanover County), she is a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and civil liberties; in 2018 she drew national attention for her House-floor confrontation opposing legislation in the wake of HB2. Butler champions environmental protection, clean water and coastal issues, and consistently supports public education funding, Medicaid expansion, and reproductive rights.
