Jason W. Smith
About
Jason W. Smith is a native of Alabama who spent roughly nine years in private legal practice before joining the New Hanover County District Attorney's Office as an Assistant District Attorney in 2010. In 2014 he was tapped to lead the Pender County ADA office, a role he held for nearly a decade before returning to the New Hanover County office. Across more than 14 years as a prosecutor he handled cases ranging from traffic violations to homicides in both counties. Elected DA in November 2024 (term 2025–2028), Smith succeeded 19-year DA Ben David. He ran on continuity, prosecutorial experience, and public safety, and has named victim rights as his top prosecutorial priority — pledging to "seek justice through fair, impartial, vigorous, and efficient enforcement of criminal laws."
