Michael V. Lee
About
Michael V. Lee is a commercial real estate and land-use attorney in Wilmington who first joined the NC Senate by appointment in August 2014, succeeding Thom Goolsby. Elected in his own right in 2016, defeated in 2018 by Harper Peterson, and returned to the seat in a 2020 rematch, Lee has been re-elected in 2022 and 2024 (current term through January 1, 2027). In April 2025 his caucus elected him Senate Majority Leader, making him among the most powerful legislators from New Hanover County. Representing District 7, he focuses on land-use, property-rights, and coastal-development legislation; conservative fiscal policy including corporate and individual tax cuts; and education-choice and charter-school expansion. As Majority Leader he plays a central role in setting the Senate floor agenda.
