Pete Wildeboer is a career educator who previously served on a local education board before winning his current seat on the New Hanover County Board of Education in November 2022 (term 2022–2026). He was named Board Chair for 2025 and re-elected Chair in December 2025 for the final year of his term. Wildeboer announced he will not seek re-election in 2026. As Chair he has led district advocacy for increased state funding for Exceptional Children (special education) programs, navigated post-pandemic academic recovery and curriculum debates, oversaw the district's response to statewide school-safety legislation, and managed budget negotiations with the Board of Commissioners.
